Lesson Implementation:

StageTeaching MethodsTeacher ActivitiesLearner ActivitiesLearning Points
Introduction - 10 minDiscussionTeacher asks: 'What are some things you can see in this classroom?'Pupils respond by naming objects such as desks, chairs, blackboard, windows, and charts.Things in the classroom include desks, chairs, blackboard, windows, and charts.
Development Step 1 - 20 minObservation (Field Trip)Teacher takes pupils on a study walk around the school. Teacher points to various objects and asks: 'What things can you see outside?'Pupils walk around the school, observe, and name things like trees, flowers, buildings, roads, and fences. The school environment contains many things such as trees, flowers, buildings, roads, and fences. Roads are found within and outside the school.
Step 2 - 20 minDiscussion and DrawingTeacher asks pupils to draw two things they saw on the walk. Teacher then shows a chart of different road types and asks: 'What type of road did you see on our walk? Is it smooth or rough?'Pupils draw two items (e.g., a tree and a road) and share with a partner. They answer: 'We saw a tarred road; it is smooth.' Pupils listen as teacher explains that other roads may be untarred or pedestrian paths.Types of roads: tarred roads are smooth and covered with bitumen; untarred roads are rough and may be dusty; pedestrian paths are for walking only.
Step 3 - 20 minDemonstration (Modeling)Teacher marks a simple road strip on the floor with chalk and demonstrates walking on the left side and crossing safely: stop at the edge, look left, right, and left again. Teacher says: 'Now you try.'Pupils take turns to walk along the simulated road, stop at the edge, look left and right, and cross safely while reciting the steps.Safety rules: walk on the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic; stop at the edge, look left, right, and left again before crossing; cross only at zebra crossings or where clear.
Evaluation questions - 10 minQuestion and AnswerTeacher asks: 'Name two things in our classroom. Name two things you saw outside. What type of road did we see on our walk? Show how to cross the road safely.'Pupils answer: 'Desks and chairs; trees and roads; a tarred road.' One or more pupils demonstrate safe crossing as taught. We can identify things in our environment; there are different types of roads; and we must follow safety rules when walking and crossing the road.
